CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro, Sept. 1 (PIA) – The City Health and Sanitation Department (CHSD) launched this morning the “Tigdas-German Measles Oral Polio Vaccine Mass Immunization 2014” in front of Calapan City Public Market.

The launching ceremony dubbed “Ligtas sa Tigdas, Magkaisa, Magpabakuna” was attended and participated-in by more than 300 people, mostly parents with five-year old children and below to undergo immunization and oral polio vaccine. This launching activity has been simultaneously conducted nationwide – with today being the start of mass immunization to young children.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Ma. Teresita N. Bolor, program manager of the city government’s health development program emphasized this special activity as a good opportunity to make everybody become aware about immunization as this is a month long activity this September. She encouraged all parents with children five years old and below to undergo immunization in order to eliminate sickness like measles.

Mayor Arnan C. Panaligan started the ceremonial “Patak of Oral Polio Vaccine” to children. Panaligan believed that the target of the city government to immunize all children in Calapan City will be met through the exerted efforts of all the personnel of CHSD.

The city government acknowledged the support of the following institutions to the program, and awarded the Certificate of Appreciation to the following: Rotary Club of Downtown Calapan, Rotary Club of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro Medical Society, Maria Estrella General Hospital, Hospital of the Holy Cross, Philippine Association of Family Physicians, Iglesia Ni Cristo, Apostolic Vicariate of Calapan, Divine Word College of Calapan, Tamaraw Vision Network, Association of Barangay Captains, Philippine Information Agency, City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Information Office, Philippine Ports Authority, Calapan Cable, Sangguniang Panlungsod, Oriental Mindoro Media Club, SuperCat, Spirit FM, DWOM FM, Public Safety Department and the City Public Market.

Moreover, City Health Officer Dr. Basilisa Llanto disclosed in her message that mass immunization program will be open from Monday to Friday this month of September. She said parents should visit their respective barangay centers to know the schedule of vaccination in their area. Also, she mentioned that an estimated 17,000 children will be expected to undergo immunization and oral polio vaccine in the province of Oriental Mindoro.

The city health team expressed optimism in attaining the target as their office will also conduct house to house visit to ensure that all children, especially in Calapan City will be given oral polio vaccine and immunization. (LTC/LBR/PIAMimaropa/Calapan)
