Puerto Galera hosts Most Beautiful Bays’ Congress

QUEZON CITY, Feb 5 (PIA) — Oriental Mindoro’s Puerto Galera is getting the international spotlight anew these days as the municipality host the 11th Congress of the Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in World.

The Club, composed of organizations committed in preserving natural heritage and developing the economic potentials of the bays they represent, kicked off its congress on Tuesday with participating delegates from 18 countries and 28 member associations.

Designated by UNESCO as Man and Biosphere reserve and one of the areas with diverse coral reefs in Asia, the Puerto Galera Bay is the only Philippine Bay listed with the Club. Puerto Galera’s Sabang and White beaches are among the popular getaways while snorkeling and diving are the leading water sports of sunloving vacationers.

“It’s good to be included in the prestigious club…it has increased tourist arrivals…,” said Mayor Hubbert Dolor.

The municipality, Mayor Dolor said, is deeply involved with the club’s Congress preparations including the drawing of plans for security and itineraries of guests.

“(Visitors) will have the chance to do snorkeling (near the Medio Island), we will bring them to Ponderosa (Golf Club) yung ating Mount Malasimbo so they will have a good view of the (Puerto Galera) Bay,” said Mayor Dolor

Guests will likewise have encounter with Mangyan culture as they are scheduled to visit a few villages where Puerto Galera’s indigenous products are made. Mayor Dolor added that they will be pitching for their climate change adaptation and mitigation practices throughout the congress.

“Basically taking care of Mother Nature, basically taking care of the ocean, taking care of our corals…people should also know the rules and regulations (on environment and natural resources) set forth by local government units and national agencies…we should teach our people how to adapt and mitigate,” he said.
